Assam - Bengal Basin
Stratigraphy and Structural History of Assam - Bengal Basin with implications for
Hydrocarbon Exploration in the Upper Assam Valley
The Assam - Bengal Basin contains large accumulations of gas and oil.  It is also one of the most
tectonically active regions in the world.  The result is a complex interplay between structure and
stratigraphy to produce a dynamic petroleum system.  The geologic map above represents part of a GIS
project assembled from published and proprietary data and maps to illustrate the concept of a dynamic
hydrocarbon system.  A summary of this work was presented at the 2006 AAPG Annual Convention.  The
illustrations for this presentation are available at:

The Dirak Prospect generated while working with HOEC and Premier Oil resulted in a discovery in the
Upper Assam Valley.  The prospect lead was developed from surface geology and structural geologic
concepts.  Balanced cross sections made by Dr. Premanand Mishra, then with HOEC, supported and
help continue advancement of the prospect development.  Additional seismic and geologic effort by
HOEC extended the high-risk lead into a drillable and eventually successful prospect.
